New story in Esquire

For journalists, a story in Esquire magazine has always been like making it to The Show. The stories they’ve published over the years have become part of the American conversation. They’ve always made room for (and spent money on) the best and deepest journalism. And now they’re doing some of the same kind of work in the digital frame.

So I’m proud — and still a little astonished — to have my first story published in Esquire. It’s on the Rev. William Barber, a North Carolina pastor who might just turn out to be the leader of the resistance to President Trump. My friend (and neighbor!) Travis Dove shot a couple of beautiful portraits for the story, and the great Megan Greenwell not only gave the story the green light, but edited it beautifully.

Hope to have many more in Esquire down the road.
